Fun Activities for the Kids At the Manatee Center

Manatee-Center

When looking for things to do in Port St Lucie be sure to visit the Manatee Center.  Whether the kids are on vacation, spring break or off for the holiday they will enjoy the Manatee Center in Fort Pierce.  The staff is very knowledgeable in marine life and reptiles.  There are various fish tanks, reptiles and information stations.  Outside you can walk out on the docks and there is an observation deck.  There are some nice Manatee statues to take pictures of the kids with a nice gift shop inside.  The cost is very minimal and even if you do not spot a Manatee the center is well worth visiting.  Even though we did not see a Manatee the day we went we still caught a glimpse of some marine life off the docks.  With such beautiful weather, it was a joy just to see the water and blue skies.  Nearby is a tourist center to pick up some brochures for other activities on the Treasure Coast.

The center is located west of the Atlantic and overlooks the Indian River Lagoon known for the historical resting spot for the Manatees.  Besides the Manatees one might see a variety of wildlife including Dolphins, Brown Pelicans, Terns and a stroll through the butterfly center with beautiful flowers attracting the butterflies.

Port St Lucie Bonsai Gardens

Port St Lucie Bonsai Gardens

Heathcote GardensHeathcote Gardens Bonsai Trees

Over the years we have visited the various tropical gardens in Florida.  Heathcote Gardens had a pleasant surprise awaiting us with their beautiful collection of Bonsai Trees.  According to the USDA Plant Hardiness Map, Florida is in Zone 10A making it the perfect climate for Mediterranean and tropical plants.  The Heathcote Gardens are sectioned off in a variety of different gardens including:

  1. James J Smith Bonsai Gallery – Features over 100 Bonsai Trees on pedestals including my favorite, the Bougainvillea Bonsai
  2. Japanese Garden – This garden is serene and elegant with its different plant forms and shapes strategically placed to draw the eye to each change in plant design
  3. Reflection Garden – A beautiful spot to sit and meditate.  The garden cat likes to lounge here too!
  4. Herb Garden – Must start growing a garden like this one.  Fresh herbs in the garden make everything taste better in the kitchen.
  5. Tropical Rainforest Garden – Lush green landscape with a splash of tropical blossoms.
  6. Native Florida Plant Garden – Plants that can take the Florida heat and resilient to our climate.
  7. Palm & Cycad Walk – There are many varieties of Palm Trees along the path to explore which tree to plant in your yard.  Who knew there were so many species of palm trees?

Plan Your Port St Lucie Tropical Garden

The plants in the Heathcote tropical gardens have been labeled making it easier to identify the different plants.  This will help you to plan your Florida garden and find the plants that you like along with how to arrange them in your garden.  Landscaping can be overwhelming for any homeowner.  Visiting a garden helps you to learn and identify plants and the type of care they may need.  If you are unsure where to start then try a smaller area in your yard.  Once the plants are growing move on to another section.  Remember Heathcote did not get built in a day and with good plant knowledge and landscaping planning you can turn your backyard into a tropical oasis.  Hopefully, more people will plant trees and other tropical plants to Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful.  Remember having shade around the house cools down the temperature inside and out to enjoy Florida outdoor living in your backyard.  So get started planning and planting your Tropical Backyard by visiting Heathcote today!

Heathcote Gardens is Located:  210 Savannah Rd, Fort Pierce, FL 34982

Whether you are a local looking for things to do in Port St Lucie, on vacation or a snowbird, Port St Lucie fishing areas are some of the best fishing in Florida.  Fishing in Port St Lucie and treasure Coast has its relaxing qualities to spend a morning or evening just hanging out at the waters edge whether you are a fisherman or just a curious onlooker.  There is something about the salty air and outdoors scenery that can draw anyone into the sport whether they like to fish or not.  The time can drift away by day-dreaming, the thrill of the catch or meeting new people who share your passion for sportfishing.  Finding the right Port St Lucie fishing spot is as exciting as the sport itself.  Below are some popular fishing spots as some off the beaten path.

Jensen Beach Causeway:  Under the Jensen Beach Causeway Bridge located off Indian River Drive you will find a pier and a walkway under the bridge with a scenic view of the Indian River.  There is a playground for the kids and a picnic-like setting for family gatherings.  Fishermen catch a variety of fish and the locals will share their best fishing advice for newcomers.  You will find many local regulars and the Snook Nook bait shop is not too far in case you need the right tackle or equipment.

Little Jim Bridge:  There are two bridges that connect Fort Pierce to Hutchinson Island go to the Eastern side of the bridge.  Fishermen use both live and dead bait to catch Snapper, Snook, and Sheepshead.  The Sheepshead has human-like teeth.  Best to fish when the tide is moving in or out.  Port St Lucie Tide Checker

Fort Pierce Inlet:  Just North of Avenue E in Fort Pierce make a right on A1A also known as Seaway Drive head East until you reach the end.  The fishermen are catching Snapper, Big Snook, Flounder, Pompano, Bluefish, Tarpon and Spanish Mackerel.

Visit Snook Nook 3553 County Rd 707 Jensen Beach, Florida for Bait and other fishing accessories. If you are only in town for a few days  and looking for things to do in Port St Lucie you can also purchase a license to fish.

Local Business of the Month Shell Bazaar

Port St Lucie Shell BazaarShell Bazaar Port Saint Lucie FL

Supporting our local businesses is an integral part of Port St Lucie’s future business development.    Put it on your things to do in Port St Lucie list.  If we want to keep our city quaint hometown feel with unique shops we must support small businesses.  So the next time you are out shopping for a gift, home accessory,  or specialty food item remember to visit your favorite local spots.

Our featured business of the month is also one of the tourists favorite photographed landmarks along Federal Highway.  The big conch shell that sits on US1 just north of SE Jennings Rd in Port St Lucie stands out as a tourist attraction in itself.

Visiting Florida shell shops as a child bring back many fond memories of discovering the different shells and handmade shell products such as mirrors, animal figurines, and jewelry.  There is something magical about the sea and bringing home these treasures to decorate or keep as a souvenir from a favorite vacation makes these Florida tropical memories last.

The next time you pass by the Shell Bazaar take a moment to stop in and support your local business.  They have many decorative items along with jewelry and shells to make your own decorations or to send as a gift to a friend out of State.  The Shell Bazaar also carries specialty food items like Coconut Patties that perhaps a senior friend up North would enjoy special treats from Florida.
